From <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylab.com\/transportation\/2019\/04\/protected-bike-lanes-traffic-safety-cambridge-bicycle-plan\/586876\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cambridge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylab.com\/transportation\/2018\/10\/how-bogotas-cycling-superhighway-shaped-a-generation\/571900\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bogota<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylab.com\/transportation\/2018\/05\/oslos-race-to-become-a-major-bike-haven\/559358\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oslo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usa.streetsblog.org\/2018\/05\/07\/six-secrets-from-the-planner-of-sevillas-lightning-bike-network\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seville<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cities not located in The Netherlands are doubling-down on bicycling. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there is a growing recognition that in order to promote wide-scale adoption of bicycling, investments in physical infrastructure must also be paired with investments in social infrastructure. As defined by Dr. Adonia Lugo, the social infrastructure are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylab.com\/equity\/2018\/07\/is-bike-infrastructure-enough\/565271\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social networks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.strongtowns.org\/journal\/2019\/2\/6\/a-conversation-with-adonia-lugo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human relationships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that build a community that values bicycling.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to promote social infrastructure for bicycling in our local community, in March 2019, the Healthy Places GSD student group thus hosted the Boston area premiere of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/whywecycle.eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why We Cycle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a documentary about Dutch cycling culture. Overall, the event was a huge success as about 200 people packed into the GSD\u2019s Piper Auditorium. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/research.gsd.harvard.edu\/healthy\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/55\/files\/2019\/05\/why-we-cycle-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-336\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film screening was followed by a panel moderated by Lily Song of the Harvard GSD, featuring Michelle Cook of Roxbury Rides, Angela Johnson of Transportation for Massachusetts, Cara Seiderman of the City of Cambridge, and Anne Lusk of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/research.gsd.harvard.edu\/healthy\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/55\/files\/2019\/05\/why-we-cycle-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-337\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there are many countervailing forces against bicycle urbanism in the United States, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/why-us-cities-are-becoming-more-dangerous-for-cyclists-and-pedestrians-111713\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a rise in cycling deaths<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a cultural and economic apparatus that impels people to own motor vehicles, our event showed that there is a large appetite for a different urban future in Boston. A future urban mobility that allows residents to improve their health and mitigate climate change at the same time. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cycling truly can transform a society.
