Collects 8,000 tons of waste per day

Phase: Operation will start in November 2015

Sponsor: Solvi Valorização Energética

Termoverde Caieiras is a thermal power plant located next to the landfill and waste treatment center of Caieiras, which receives approximately 8,000 tons of waste per day from São Paulo’s metropolitan region, Brazil. The thermal power plant will include 21 generators, each with a capacity of 1.4 MW, as well the construction of a small transmission line connecting the plant to the national grid. In total, the plant has an installed capacity of 30 MW, enough to power a city of 300,000 inhabitants.

The project uses the landfill gas to produce electricity, operating as an independent power producer that handles a biogas volume of 18,000 Nm3 per hour. Termoverde Caeirias is using an innovative technology to prevent leachate contamination and protect water quality. In addition, Solvi Valorização Energética—the project sponsor— is working with local NGOs to promote technology literacy programs for neighboring communities.
