US $60 million investment

19.8 MW

45 hectares reforestation

AES Chivor, a Latin American power company, is overseeing the installation of this small-scale hydroelectric facility with 19.8MW generation capacity in rural Colombia. The project is remarkable for its level of infrastructure bundling – many of the required civil structures were built during construction of the nearby Chivor Hydroelectric Plant and Esmeralda Reservoir. The high utilization of the water is due to the diversion tunnel of Tunjita’s River where the Tunjita project is located. As a result of these synergies, the plant will be brought online in less than three years and at a cost in orders of magnitude below than standard hydroelectric projects. As part of its commitments to the communities and environmental authorities, the project will implement reforestation programs of 45 hectares. The Tunjita Plant will be a win for both community members and the Colombian grid.
