Sky Garden
Sky Garden is a prototype investigating the potential for suspended ceramic ceiling elements.
Compared to existing suspended ceilings, ceramics offer increased aesthetic as well as performance benefits. The prototype, a student project from a course offered by M. Bechthold and N. King, explores the benefits and manufacturing challenges of creating an integrated ceramic ceiling system. It specifically addresses lighting, as well as air purification and moisture content control through plants. The system consists of a number of cast components, which can be mass-produced with conventional manufacturing methods. The components are optimized for their specific functions through custom perforations and incisions, which could be efficiently performed by industrial robots. The project was exhibited at the 2013 Milano MADE exhibition.
