Kathmandu Durbar Square is the historical cultural and political center of Kathmandu. The Square is home to temples, shrines, and palaces that date back to different eras in the history of the Kathmandu Valley, many of which were damaged or destroyed during the earthquake. The space is filled with rubble, with posters and photographs being the only allusion to the former beauty. Visitors are still welcome to the square, but they must navigate a path marked with bright signs declaring ‘safe zones’ and ‘restricted zones.’
