These photos were taken in the VDC of Sangachok, within Sindhupalchok, one of the districts most affected by the earthquake. The women shared their story with us through a translator. They are subsistence farmers; their homes were completely flattend by the earthquakes and family members were killed. They now live in temporary shelters, taking care of everything – nearly all their husbands have migrated abroad to work (many returned for just long enough to help build the temporary shelters). One of the women in particular was adamant about showing us her destroyed house and telling us about her grandchildren, who are in her sole care. The second photograph is this family. None of these women could express their hopes for the future and all instead explained that they live in constant fear from the earthquake. Their one collective desire was for a small, safe home.
