Hatzav Yoffe (MLAII ’13, RA Zofnass), Anthony Kane (MDesS ’09, RA Zofnass) and Cristina Contreras (RA Zofnass), from the Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure were invited to participate as panelists on the 11th Latin American Infrastructure Leadership Forum that took place in Mexico City this past 3-5 June 2013. This new initiative introduced the 360° Awards and the Envision™ rating system as a tool for infrastructure evaluation that awoke a big interest among the public.

The 360° awards were presented in this forum as a innovative initiative that aims to recognize sustainable practices while starting a dialogue between academia, the private sector and the Interamerican Development Bank.

During the forum the GSD Zofnass team had the opportunity to present the Envision™ rating system and to award the two pioneer case studies developed in Latin America: the Palmatir Wind Power Project in Uruguay and the Juan Santa Maria International Airport in Costa Rica. After the award ceremony the project owners had time to share their experiences throughout the evaluation process. This successful event was followed by an open discussion and question and answer session with prospective project owners interested in applying for the awards.

The GSD Zofnass team will be looking for projects that meet the following criteria: be part of the IDB borrowing member countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, having at least 50% privately funded and over US $30 million cost, and currently being under construction or operations.

Infrastructure projects such as roads, water treatment plants, airports, mass transportation, energy and solid waste management will be assess by the Envision rating system that was developed under the Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure in partnership with the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI). Envision provides a holistic framework for evaluating and rating the community, environmental and economic benefits of all types and sizes of infrastructure projects. It gives recognition to initiatives that use transformational, collaborative approaches to integrate sustainability measures through the course of the project’s life cycle.

For further information on this initiative, please see the IDB 360° Awards announcement and look out for additional updates about the awards as it is established.
