Join us at Smart Cities NY for workshop “Island in Crisis: Incubating Innovation in Puerto Rico’s Recovery to meed SDGs”

This year, we are proud to announce a continued partnership with Smart Cities New York (May 8-10, NY), where a diverse global community of leaders from business, government, academia, civil society, and startups will explore the emerging power of cities on the world stage. How can technology transform  the lives of citizens? What drives innovation? Where will ideas and expertise rise from next? Who will lead the movement for better, safer, smarter cities?

We will be hosting the workshop “Island in Crisis: Incubating Innovation in Puerto Rico’s Recovery to meed SDGs” on May 8th. Research Associates Judith Rodríguez, Cristina Contreras, and Yannis Orfanos will present an analytical framework for resilience and sustainability of infrastructure systems aligned with the SDGs and smart city concepts. Puerto Rico has faced significant challenges since hit by hurricanes Irma and Maria. The isolated geographic location, poor condition of existing infrastructure, economic crisis, and low access of resources have marked an ongoing complex recovery process. Live polling will be integrated into the workshop session to obtain data on the audience perception regarding a real-world problem. Discussions will be framed on research developed at Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure on holistic infrastructure systems, with the goal to enable discussions for solutions that redefine urban environments safer, smarter and more resilient.

The partnership with Smart Cities NY started in 2017, when the Zofnass Program hosted a workshop titled “Data-driven insights for urban water systems” with the goal to introduce a web application for urban water systems that informs non-expert city stakeholders, such as city officials, policy makers, real estate developers, and the community.
