Jack Alvarenga

Jack Alvarenga is a Staff Scientist at Harvard SEAS. Jack received his B.S. in Physics and M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he investigated the synthesis and integration of carbon nanotube materials for aerospace wiring. In the Aizenberg Lab, he contributes a broad background in the design, fabrication, and certification of experimental systems for research material testing, acquired in diverse application areas ranging from anti-fouling coatings, filtration membranes, catalysis, and medical devices. This includes the development of manufacturing and characterization methods required to pave the path of technology de-risking towards commercial viability. His technical skills include a high-level proficiency in various specialized instrumentation, including rheology, nanoindentation, vibrational and optical spectroscopy (FTIR, Raman, UV-Vis), atomic force microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, mass spectrometry, infrared thermography, high speed imaging, and soft lithography. Jack has a proven track record of strong organizational and communication skills required to assist and collaborate with multidisciplinary groups of technology innovators and engineers, as well as architects, biologists, and clinicians, in a dynamic team environment. Ultimately, he is driven by the search for innovative materials systems that can make an impact beyond the walls of the laboratory, while firmly believing that fundamental and radical materials research will be crucial to addressing several of the issues facing contemporary society, including healthcare, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
