GSD student work on ceramics in WIRED
MDes students have married age-old materials with modern processes to create beautiful, innovative building surfaces. Jared Friedman, Olga Mesa and Hea Min Kim (all MDes in Technology ’15) were charged with rethinking the architectural application of ceramics for a project in Material Systems: Digital Design, Fabrication, and Research Methods, taught by Nathan King (DDes candidate) and Rachel Vroman (associate fabrication lab manager) in fall 2013. With the aid of robotic technology developed in the Design Robotics Group, now the Materials Processes and Systems Group, they were able to create a delicate woven ceramic surface that admits dappled light and can be produced in variable patterns.
